Rural Community Health Program
The Nicaraguan Family Health Model and AMOS
AMOS works in coordination with the Nicaraguan government’s Ministry of Health (MINSA) to complement their Family Health Model (Modelo de Salud Familiar) and develop a model to help other municipalities with integral health services using the framework of primary health care.
In the Nicaraguan family health model, every 2000 people are assigned a Family Health Team which includes a physician and a nurse. In rural areas, however, 2000 people are spread out over an extremely large geographical area, and many people have to walk between 1 to 3 hours to the nearest health center.
We are currently implementing this model of rural community health in coordination with MINSA in the municipality of San Jose de los Remates (SJR). The total population of San Jose de los Remates according to the national demographic survey done in 2005 is 7650 people. The urban population is 1763 (23% of the population) and the rural population is 5887 (77% of the population). The population density is 27 people per square kilometer compared to 3509 people per square kilometer in the city of Managua.
AMOS trains health promoters from difficult to reach rural communities in order to provide extended coverage of basic health care services. Communities with trained health promoters and a small community based clinic include:
In geographic locations serving larger populations, AMOS will help to provide a small community based clinic as shown by the red houses above. The blue houses are government clinics. Health promoters are needed in rural areas even near government clinics because of the high dispersion of the population in rural areas.
