Primary Health Care
Primary Health Care is defined by the World Health Organization as “essential health care based on practical, scientifically sound and socially acceptable methods and technology made universally accessible to individuals and families in the community through their full participation and at a cost that the community and the country can afford to maintain at every stage of their development in the spirit of self-determination.¨
The Primary Health Care Model was developed by health care workers all over the world seeking to provide health care for poor and marginalized populations. The model is outlined in the Declaration of Alma Ata.
Primary health care systems are founded on the following principles:
1.Responsiveness to people’s health needs
2.Quality-oriented services that are based on evidence and emphasize treating people with dignity and respect.
3.Participation of the community in the decisions that affect their lives
4.Government accountability to assure that social rights are realized and enforced
5.Intersectorality: collaborating with agricultural development, education, housing, water, sanitation, employment in both the public and private sectors to make a bigger impact in health.
The Declaration of Alma Ata was adopted to call for urgent action by governments and the world community to promote the health of all people in the world.
