Patient Care Program
Problem: An estimated 80% of the rural population of Nicaragua lives on less than $2 per day, which makes access to essential medications and supplies extremely difficult. Many people living in extreme poverty go without medical care or go into debt because they are unable to pay for adequate health care.
Goal: Provide logistical support for rural patients who need to come to the city of Managua for lab tests or specialized health care as well as provide patients with medications and supplies.
Program: AMOS physicians, Drs. David and Laura Parajón, see patients through referrals from clinics in both rural and urban areas of Nicaragua who are unable to afford higher level care because of financial barriers. They assess each patients needs and then arrange the necessary follow-up which can include logistical support, medications, lab tests, nutritional supplements, or an appointment with a specialist.
The service provided by the patient care program helps the needs of many impoverished patients in Nicaragua who would have otherwise died or gone without care.
