The purpose of this program is to prolong the life of patients with AIDS and contribute to the prevention of the transmission of the virus. Specific objectives:
1. Support MINSA/ the program of the Hospital of Roberto Calderon with medicines for the treatment of illnesses in patients with AIDS.
2. Support the interning and residential staff that are held responsible for the care of the patients with HIV/AIDS, including the participation of volunteers in the program.
3. Support to the MINSA/Hospital Bertha Calderón in their program of prevention of vertical transmission (Of the mother to the child) with the obtaining of HIV tests and supporting in the education for the prevention.
4. Increase the knowledge about HIV and promote the sensitivity and the respect for the rights of the people with HIV/AIDS between the evangelical churches of Nicaragua.
This year, we plan to expand the reach of White Cross by also helping patients with AIDS to be able to cover medication needs for opportunistic infections. These are infections that people with a normal immune system do not usually get such as fungal infections or a rare pneumonia spread by birds. Since AIDS patients are usually stigmatized in Nicaragua, they often lose their social support system, and have no buffer to help them with their illness. White Cross helps by bridging the gap for those who are poor and marginalized.
